Toddler Mom-ing is Hard

Toddlers are wild - absolutely adorable, and at times, absolutely difficult. We've all been there! Keep reading if you're stressing your next family photo session with your toddler.

Tips for a Smooth Mini Session with Your Toddler

1. Talk About the Session Ahead of Time

Let your toddler know they’re going to meet a photographer who’s going to take fun pictures. Use upbeat language like, “We’re going to play and smile for the camera!”

2. pick a time of day that suits the toddler

If your babe has a 6:00p bedtime, don't expect them to stay up and party for a photoshoot - it could be great, or it could be meltdown city. Try to pick a time that they normally enjoy activities!

3. Don’t Stress About the Outfit

Choose something comfortable and cute. If they hate stiff collars or itchy tags, skip them — a happy kid in a simple outfit will always photograph better than a fussy one in formalwear. Also, sometimes it helps to change in the car right when you arrive rather than wearing the outfit the entire car ride there!

4. Arrive Early (If You Can)

Giving your toddler 5–10 minutes to explore the area helps them warm up to the environment before the session starts. In the context of studio minis - playing outside or in the lobby for 5 minutes can help take some of the stress off of all of you, relax and get excited to make memories to last a lifetime.

5. make sure you don't have a hangry babe

Make sure your little one had a yummy, filling snack (not in their photoshoot clothes!) before leaving the house. Put this in your reminders so you don't forget in the midst of all the getting ready chaos!

6. Bring One “Comfort Item”

A small stuffed animal or toy can be a great ice-breaker, and we can even sneak it into a few shots if it’s meaningful!

7. Let Me Lead the Way

I’ll guide the session with toddler-friendly prompts and play-based posing. If your little one needs a minute, we’ll pivot — no pressure, ever.

8. Manage Expectations

Mini sessions move fast — and that’s great! It will be over before you know it - embrace the chaos, and let me capture the magic in between.

9. Stay Close — But Not Too Close

Toddlers often respond better when parents give them space to explore. Stay nearby for safety, but let them check things out and do their toddler thing (aka find fascination in the most tiny, unpredictable details).

10. Trust the Process

Some kids take a little while to warm up — and that’s totally normal. I’ve photographed a lot of toddlers, and patience is part of the magic.

Two children play with disco balls in a bright white studio setting.
A small child in a pink dress stands at a vanity table with a heart-shaped mirror and pink decorative elements.
Two young children in fancy dresses sit outdoors with decorative baskets and floral arrangements.

Let's make your family session stress-free.

They're never this small again, so while it's a challenge to get out for photos - let's do it. Future you is already thanking you!
