Bringing your dog (or cat… or horse!) to your photo session? Yes, please! Pets are part of the family — and they deserve to be in the picture, too. Whether you’re planning a maternity shoot, a family session, or even milestone photos, including your pet adds personality, connection, and often a few hilarious outtakes.
As a Phoenix family photographer who’s worked with everything from high-energy puppies to shy rescue kittens, I’ve learned a few tricks to help make the experience fun and stress-free.
Here are my top tips for a successful photo session with pets:
1. Tell Your Photographer Ahead of Time
This helps me plan the flow of your session and scout the best pet-friendly locations. I’ll also bring a few backup tricks (and treats!) to help things run smoothly.
2. Pack the Essentials
Bring a leash, waste bags, a water bowl, and a few of your pet’s favorite treats or toys. For dogs that shed, a lint roller doesn’t hurt either!
3. Time it Right
Sessions work best when your pet has burned off some energy beforehand but isn’t overtired. A short walk or play session before the shoot can help them feel relaxed and ready.
4. Consider an Extra Set of Hands
If possible, bring a friend or family member to help manage your pet when they’re not in the shot. It gives you more flexibility and lets us focus on a variety of combinations (just the kids, just the couple, etc.).
5. Embrace the Chaos
Pets do unpredictable things — and that’s part of the charm. Whether your pup sits perfectly or photobombs every shot, we’ll capture authentic moments that reflect real life. (Those goofy in-between moments often turn out to be client favorites!)
6. Choose an Outfit that can handle Fur and Paws
Avoid black if your pet sheds light fur, and think about how your outfit will hold up if your dog jumps up to say hi. Flowy dresses, earthy tones, and texture-rich layers tend to photograph well with pets.
7. Pick the Right Location
Not all spots are pet-friendly. I can help suggest the perfect location in the Phoenix area that works beautifully for both people and pets — open space, shade, and a calm atmosphere make a big difference.
At the end of the day, your photo session should reflect your real life — and if your pet is part of your everyday joy, they should absolutely be part of your photos, too. With a little planning (and maybe a squeaky toy or two), we’ll make sure they shine right alongside the rest of your family.
